Can everyone run through the following check list on their bikes please:
Bike inspection check list
Headset check
Stand over the bike, hold the front brake on and try moving the bike back and forth.
Listen and feel for any movement in the headset, there should be no movement.
BB check
With the bike on the ground, hold both crank arms and try moving them from side to side (into and away from the frame).
There should be no movement.
Tyre check
Do a visual inspection of the tyres, look for cuts and cracks whilst checking the tread still has plenty of rubber.
Chain check
Put the chain in the big chainring. At the 3 o'clock position try pulling the chain away rom the chainring.
There should be a little bit of movement but anything over 5mm suggests the chain is worn.
Also check for corrosion.
Spoke check
Check each spoke by trying to move it between your thumb and forefinger. Each spoke should be nice and tight making a nice twang when you flick it.
Cleat check
For those with plastic cleats, make sure you still have plenty of plastic left.
Some riders are opting for SPD style cleats with mtb/touring shoes to make it easier when pottering around the car getting bikes down from the roof.
Wheel bearing check
Try to move the wheels from side to side to make sure there is no movement in the wheel hub.
Brake pad check
Visually check the brake pads to make sure you have plenty of rubber for those steep descents.
If any of the checks above flag up any issues send me and email (lawrence4177@gmail.com) and I will try to advise to help solve the problem.
Also, if adding a plastic wheel reflector to your wheels try to put it the opposite side to the valve - eg, if the valve is at 12 o'clock the reflector should be at 6 o'clock.
Spares list
Keeping in mind that each rider is unlikely to ride more than 300km during the race we don't expect to get through too many spares therefore I ask that you all supply your own, specifically the following:
Spare Tyres: 2
Spare Tubes: 4 - 6
Brake Cables: 2
Gear Cables: 2
We can keep a log of who has what and reimburse anyone who has to use
spares on someone else's bikes. If you can label your spares so we know who owns what that would help.
