Liam owns a camper van (RV) and has kindly offered to drive it around Ireland with us. It will effectively act as the mobile HQ and sleeping area (for some) during the race itself.
Myself and Ciaran met with Liam last night and brought him up to speed with what the event is ; who we are and how we hope to do it.
Liam is a friend of mine - mainly through our wives, and know little or nothing about cycling or RAI etc but is intrigued with the challenge and the planning involved.
He should be a positive asset to the team, apart from having the camper van and being a trained paramedic he’s also an army reservist working in the logistics area!
Liam will arrange for it to able be to host probably a max of 4 folk to be able to stretch out and sleep at one time. We won't be able to cook/heat up food whilst its driving. It doesn't have a microwave, but does have a hob and rings so that in theory food could be heated up as needed. 4 won't cover everyone - we'll still need people to drive the follow-on car even when its not officially on duty.
Everyone should bring their own sleeping bag and a pillow. these will stay in the main in the RV for access when needed. The RV won't be supplying bed linen etc.
He's going to get his hands on a generator - so we'll probably have to pay for some fuel for this - but that should sort us out with power for the Journey , so we can recharge equipment etc. ON the assumption he does source a generator then we could be also able to bring along a Microwave and other aspects and use them out of "normal" plugs.
The RV doesn't have shower facilities, so we'll need to see if/how we can source this elsewhere (if really needed at all).
We'll get some plastic disposable plates+cutlery. No washing up -> all into the bin.
The team will need to pay for some PVC covers he'll need to put on the beds (3 singles - he has one already for the double bed). He'll look in to this and come back with a price etc.
We'll have to all be prepared to help clean the RV and the other vehicles once the race is over. or else we perhaps pay someone to do this ?
Also he raised the idea of a large whiteboard "war room - operations chart" was suggested. part of this would be a large map of Ireland showing the route, the expected handovers, petrol stations, phone numbers, hotels, fire stations etc. Indeed any info that we might want to share among ourselves and have as a reference - it would stay in the RV.
We will for sure need a back-up / companion person for Liam. Like the rest of us he'll be moving most of the time, and if he's not driving there'll be food and things to be done - so he's going to see about getting a friend to come along for the journey .. but we should still look for more crew to help.

- We can add more details , or answer questions regarding the van in the coming days.
